This quote is from Little House in the Big Woods. The chapter is “The Wonderful Machine”: Autumn had come into the Big Woods. Laura and Mary helped Ma and Pa with the work: gathering nuts in the woods as well as harvesting potatoes, carrots and pumpkins from the garden. It was a busy time but also a time of good things to eat.
(This could have been such a wonderful scene if there wasn’t all the writing about pumpkins in it: pumpkin pie and boiling pumpkins and eating stewed pumpkin… I hate pumpkin and even can’t stand the smell of it – no matter if it’s cooked or baked or pickled.)
This is from Big Woods, “Harvest.” The whole family has to help pull and put up the fruits of the fields and woods in preparation for another long Wisconsin winter!

The quote comes from ‘Little House in the Big Woods’, Page216 in my very battered Scholastic Edition that I had when I was 7 (as apparently, I felt the need to write both my name and age on the book).
It’s the end of the summer, Ma has made hats for them, the leaves have started to change, the nut trees have given a delicious harvest and now they are harvesting the veggies for the winter. The ended up eating pumpkin and a lot of corn. Pa is about to learn about the ‘Wonderful Machine’.

Answer for quote #2: Little House in the Big Woods; The Wonderful Machine; Ma, Laura, and Mary are bringing in (after Pa dug them up) potatoes, carrots, turnips, and pumpkins to put away for winter in this paragraph. (It also starts the description of preparing the pumpkin for pumpkin pie, etc)
