“Quote #7: The Long Winter; An Errand to Town; Laura and Carrie are walking back to the homestead from town. They have just purchased a mowing-machine section for Pa to replace one that broke. This part goes on to define their relationship as growing closer and developing a deeper bond.

This quote is from The Long Winter. The chapter is “An Errand to Town”:

A tooth of Pa’s mowing machine broke and Laura is sent to town buying a new one. Laura doesn’t like being among all the strangers in town but fortunately Carrie is going with her.

The quote is describing how Laura and Carrie are on the way back from town with the bought replacement part.

A little while later the two girls will be lost in the Big Slough. There they will come across Royal and Almanzo, who’ll show them the direction to the place where Pa is mowing. This will be Laura’s first meeting with her future husband.

From ‘The Long Winter’, a chapter called ‘Errand to Town’. Carrie and Laura have gone to town to get a machine piece for Pa. Both were scared – nervous about all the people – but did it and did it ‘beautifully’. This is one of the few scenes that has the female characters outside and no snow on the ground.
