I have a couple more to go back and post that I had to temporarily skip, but I appreciate you watching me.
Very sadly we start the last day of my Laurapalooza Trip. We take a quick look around Walnut Grove and then in Part 2 will head for home. The editing kind of clips off Sandra’s last word. She is saying that she (lucky girl) was heading on West to De Smet as did many of the Laurapalooza attendees. Sadly I wasn’t among them.

And One More on the Way looks at the Fond Memories store in Walnut Grove, Minnesota.

Fond Memories

I always urge everyone to take the time to walk around a Laura homesite towns because you just can’t get a proper feel for them speeding through in a car.

One of the nifty things you can find walking around the town of Walnut Grove is Fond Memories Antique Shop. A recent comment on the post about the Walnut Grove schedule for the conference asked about the scrapbooking store and this is it.

Find them in the old creamery co-op building. The beautiful building was once where area farmers brought in their milk for processing. It’s located just across from the old Walnut Grove Tribune building that between the discovery of Walnut Grove’s Laura connection in the 1940s (with the arrival of Garth Williams who was working on his re-illustration of the series and Laura herself had told him that’s the town where it was set) and the opening of the museum in the early 1970s was the main stopping place for anybody looking for Laura’s Walnut Grove connection.

Sign and side of Fond Memories

Fond Memories is part scrapbooking store and part antique store and I’ve been very pleased with my purchases from both halves. They have a lovely large craft/scrapbooking department. They have lots of unique items, including some exclusive Laura themed rubber stamps that I simply adore. In the antique half I once found a copy of Little Betty’s Cookbook AND Little Betty’s Sewing Book in incredible condition. (If anybody asks, I’ll tell you all about the marvelous Little Betty sometime.) I also found some great Hereford salt and pepper shakers a few years ago and just last year a marvelous old Lake Pepin postcard. They make it easy for you to follow what’s going on with them.

And while you are all geared up for Walnut Grove, read again about wading in Plum Creek.

If so, turn to page 47 in the current issue, which is June/July 2010. I wrote a “Family Getaways” story about visiting the Little House sites in Pepin, Wanut Grove, and De Smet. Lots of photos of the sites–including one of me and my son wading in Plum Creek!

(No, I’m sorry — I looked, but the story is not online.)

The Walnut Grove Retail Committee is putting together a brand-new cookbook containing recipes submitted by school classrooms who have visited the museum. The museum is asking for classes to hold recipe contests, then randomly draw one of these recipes to submit to the museum for publication. (The rest of the recipes can then be held for a class recipe book.)

Email the winning recipe, including title, ingredients, and directions, to lauramuseum@walnutgrove.org by February 25 (yes, short notice). One recipe from each school will be published in the cookbook along with the school’s name, grade and graduation year.

All those who submit recipes will be eligible for a drawing for a free cookbook, so include your name, address, and phone number as well.

Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact Nicole Elzenga at the museum at 859-2358.
