I’ve gotten to go to two of Wendy’s book events now because she came to both Iowa City and West Branch, Iowa near my house. When she spoke at Prairie Lights bookstore, I made a video of my experience. I think it captures the feeling of what it’s like to attend one of her book readings.
Wendy McClure at Prairie Lights

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library has included her entire speech from her visit complete with lots of photos.
Wendy McClure at Hoover Presidential Library

Two authors of upcoming books related to Laura Ingalls Wilder have written blog posts about their attendance at LauraPalooza.

One of the best parts about LauraPalooza was the emphasis on writing. As in words, beautiful words and the people who create them. Two such writers, both of whom have Laura-related books coming out in the next few months, attended and have written wonderful posts about being among the Laurarati (a term I’m co-opting from one of the writers for her replacement of “bonnet head” — you’ll see in the link below).

Wendy McClure, author of the upcoming The Wilder Life and frequent guest poster on Beyond Little House, posted about the conference on her own blog. Erin Blakemore, whose The Heroine’s Bookshelf (pre-ordering available!) will be out this October, wrote a guest post, Five Things I Learned at LauraPalooza over at Book Club Girl.

Do you have Little House pictures to share?

Wendy McClure here, your newest contributor at Beyond Little House! I’m a writer from Chicago currently finishing a book about my year revisiting the world of Laura Ingalls Wilder. When I’m not agonizing over my rough draft (I know the plural of “Ingalls” is “Ingallses,” but I keep forgetting to type it that way) I’ll be posting here periodically about my own fields of Laura obsession, which include stories about the making of the Little House books (I’m a children’s book editor) and Laura in pop culture.

I’m also here to introduce the Beyond Little House group at Flickr. There’s a photo group for the Little House TV show on Flickr and even a group about little houses, but until now, there hasn’t been a group for photos of the homesites, festivals and other Little House- and Laura-related stuff. And there’s a LOT of those to be found.

I’ve added some of my photos from my homesite trips this summer, and I’ve been searching Flickr for other photos and inviting folks to put them in the group. Some images are of places you may have seen before—like the dugout and Almanzo’s home—and some are a bit more unusual, like Pa’s homestead permit, a modern-art piece based on an Ingalls family photo, and a self-portrait of a Little House fan geeking out. And that’s just for starters.

If you’re already on Flickr, you can simply join the group and add your photos, and if you have Little House photos that you’d like to share, consider becoming a Flickr member! (It’s free, unless you want a “pro” account.) We’d also love to be able to use some of these images here on Beyond Little House, so if you’d like your pictures to be considered, just drop us a line on this discussion page to give permission (we won’t use your photos unless you say it’s OK). And keep visiting the group to see what kind of new photos show up…

Amy, Alison, and Wendy all rolled into one post!

I’m not writing a post today. Three reasons.

1. Several announcements to make.
2. Not a lot of time.
3. There’s just no way I could follow up that fantabulous post of Sandra’s yesterday.

So I leave you with a list of announcements, and a promise of something more substantial next time.

1. Congratulations to our co-contributor, Amy Mattson Lauters, on the release of her latest book, More Than a Farmer’s Wife: Voices of American Farm Women, 1910-1960. According to the product description, “This investigation of fifty years of farm life reveals that many women saw farming as an opportunity to be full partners with their husbands and considered themselves businesswomen central to the success of their farms.” Hmm… know any farm women of that time period who thought that way? I’ll post a full review of the book soon!

2. After all these years, Nellie Oleson is still fighting to keep that “country girl” from showing her up. We’ve announced here before that Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura on the Little House on the Prairie television series, is preparing to go on national tour with the Little House on the Prairie musical playing the role of Ma Ingalls, and has an autobiography coming out next month. Well, leave it to Nellie — or Alison Arngrim, who played her role on the television series. Alison is also going on tour — a Hollywood bus tour, that is — and you can go with her. Alison will share stories about Hollywood celebrities, as well as tales from her own childhood, on this three-hour-tour running several days a week from May through August 2009. And the book? Alison just signed with a publisher to release her own autobiography, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch.

3. Speaking of books, we mustn’t forget about Wendy McClure, who is currently writing The Wilder Life. She blogged this week that she’s looking for “intriguing or hilarious anecdotes about visiting any of the Laura Ingalls Wilder sites.” Have a tale for her? Drop her a line.
