Osage Tribal Museum – 75th Anniversary

I first heard of the Osage Tribal Museum as members of the Laura Ingalls Wilder listserv planned a meeting at the Little House on the Prairie Museum in Independence, Kansas. This meeting was one of the precursors to the founding of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Legacy and Research Association. During the trip some of the group also visited the Osage Tribal Museum, located in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Since then board member Connie Neumann has kept track of what’s going on there and she’s shared the information about their 75th Anniversary.

 

Connie shared this about her visit:

Rhonda was our guide and was very knowledgeable about the history of the Osage arrival in Indian Territory (1870-71) and the oil allotments during the 1920-30s Oil Boom.  The busts that were made of about 20 tribal leaders in the late 1800s are slowly coming back to the museum from the Smithsonian; there is a ceremony each time one returns.  The building was the original school built in the 1890s.

The LIW friends that went down to visit the Museum that trip in February 2008 were: Barb and Bob Hawkins, Laura McLemore, Amy Finney (LHOP Museum Mgr. at the time) and myself.  We met Sandra Hume and Amy Lauters at the LHOP site but they did not go to the museum with us that day.

For those of you who don’t realize it, the Osage tribe were the specific Native American tribe that the Ingalls family encounters in the book Little House on the Prairie. From the accounts I’ve heard, the museum is very welcoming to Laura Ingalls Wilder fans wanting to know more. For the last 75 years the museum has spread the story of the tribe. Now in honor of its 75th Anniversary they are planning a two day event, Friday, May 3rd – Saturday, May 4th, 2013.
